Me, we haven’t been in the Starbucks in years with the difference for when we get the present label for there for Christmas.
What did we “give up” to means cameras, glass, developing, collectibles which furnish art?

I bought my camera with some graduation money, I was lucky to have my parents and my grandma to help me out with paying for college and taking some photography courses. So I guess I really haven’t “sacrificed” anything…yet.

I quit smoking. I put all the money I used to spend on cigarettes into my “picture jar”.

I gave up our expensive vacations. We enjoyed traveling to far away places, but when we realized that for the price of a one week trip, we could get some real nice stuff that will last MUCH longer than a week. Now we take car trips to beautiful locations. After all, we can’t carry all this cool photo gear on the plane!

I never bought furniture and my airbed just popped. Don’t need it. I’ve got a 70’s burnt orange carpet, Ramen and beer. I always said the damage guys do to themselves in the few years between when their mom takes care of them and where their wife does takes 30 years off their lives. If we didn’t keel over at 53 we’d be stupid enough to live to 110, just to make sure noone touches the Porsche.

I have given up treating the missus and making her happy (kidding).
The money saved by not smoking for the past 14 months has certainly contributed towards the many cameras I have aquired. I used to spend £25 a week on cigarettes, I do not even want to know how much money I spent over the years, I think I could have comfortably purchased a Leica S2 with a couple of lenses. As for beer, going out and snacks.. I haven’t got round to giving them up yet (and never will).

More than anything else, I think I’ve given up TIME to be able to get to use my camera. It’s not just the shooting, because that’s usually associated with doing something fun. It’s the time that I now spend after the shoot. In the ancient days, I’d do my thing, “get it right” in the camera, and send the film off to Kodak so they could work their magic. Now, there are just so MANY things we can do on the computer. I don’t mean trying to do “Hail Mary” saves of bad images, but simply cropping, sharpening, futzing around, and then printing. It all takes time.

Time
Fancy Clothes
Food- went hungry many times in college, after college, and who knows? might just happen again.
Friends – if they don’t get photography, they don’t get me.
Furniture – everything is from the thrift shop, except the computer and the bed.
and next is smoking. I need a 400 prime so bad and in 6 mos. I’ll have the money, just from not smoking.

Heater in my truck is broken, this will be the 5th winter with no heat, can cope with most things but freezing rain poses a real safety hazard, it builds up so fast on the windows that you can’t see out.
I’ve wanted a woodworking lathe for years but the camera gear always seems to come first.
Can’t say I have given up time, yes it does take time but I enjoy it so much it’s really not a sacrifice though the upkeep of the house may have taken a nosedive as I’d much rather be out and about.
I sold a kidney to buy a lens – just kidding…
